How much are we really using the internet?!

In today’s society we use more internet in 1 second than we used during the entire year of 1993!

Image

That doesn’t really come as a surprise considering the moment we walk into a new place our first question is more than likely going to be, “What’s the password for your WiFi?”. With new technology coming out faster than we can keep up, we are finding ourselves constantly on the internet. Whether we’re just scrolling through Facebook to catch up with friends and family or we’re replying to a work email. Our internet usage has increased so much, in fact, that the world’s usage in a single second surpasses that which was used by the world in the entire year of 1993.

In 1993, only around 1-3% of classrooms and 23% percent of people had access to the internet, and it was not at all commercialized, though that would change completely by 1995. Now the internet is in nearly every household and every public building. You can almost get internet on any public street. It is reported that 1.2 billion people own and/or are using some kind of smartphone regularly, not to mention those who have them, but let them stay idle most of the time.

Netflix has rolled out profiles in order to recommend better shows to individual viewers!

The Walking Dead, Mad Men, Profile, Tampa, Netflix

Have you ever been looking through your Netflix for Mad Men and wondered who watched Pretty Little Liars? Well Netflix has stepped up to the plate on this one.  Their latest addition to their streaming services will let families and friends who share the same account to set up user profiles so that Netflix can actually suggest recommendations that you will want to watch,

The user accounts, which where introduced last Thursday, can divide a single Netflix Account into five different profiles at no additional cost from the standard $8 a month.  Netflix is hoping that its 37.6 million users will add the profile feature to their accounts in order to assist Netflix recommendation system to determine difference between viewers with drastically different tastes.

Before the release of different users accounts, it was very difficult for for Netflix to decipher between different viewers preferences.  Netflix was unable to tell the difference between a dad watching The Walking dead and his daughter watching Rugrats.  This would result in Netflix giving mismatched suggestions that would include content for mature audiences and child-friendly programming.

Neil Hunt, Netflix’s chief product officer, is quoted in saying, “If the kids have been watching a lot of Shaun the Sheep, that doesn’t particularly help us help you find the next gritty drama to watch after they have gone to bed.”

There are changes to Microsoft’s Xbox One before its even released!

PlayStation 4, Sony, Tampa, Xbox One, Microsoft

While Sony’s PlayStation 4  took the lead over Microsoft’s Xbox One in technical specifications and high performance elements when the two consoles were first announced, you can expect to see some changes before November.

At Gamescon, in Cologne, Germany, Product Chief Marc Whitten brought up the Xbox One.  During Gamescon, Whitten announced that Microsoft has made some improvements  to the Xbox One gaming console, including a six percent increase to the graphic processing unit’s speed form 800 Megahertz to 853 Megahertz.

When first announced, the earliest of the two consoles put Sony’s PlayStation 4 far in the lead in a number of aspects.  For instance, The PlayStation 4 will have around triple the memory bandwidth of Microsoft’s Xbox One.  In a nut shell, the PlayStation 4 will be able to communicate with all of its components a lot faster than Microsoft’s Xbox One will, at least where it stands now.  Another current advantage that Sony has is its 8 Gigabytes of 5500-Megahertz GDDR5 RAM, compared to Xbox One’s 8 Gigabytes of DDR3 RAM that is clocking around 2133 Megahertz.  The faster speeds of the PlayStation 4 will help games perform and load faster with less lag.  The PlayStation 4 also has a higher-performing graphics processor.

Even though Microsoft has increased the graphic processor of the Xbox One, it really may not be able to catch to Sony’s PlayStation 4 Specifications.  Microsoft, however, is sending a different kind of message.  Microsoft could continue to make changes to the Xbox One to make it more powerful in the months before the November release of both consoles.

What Microsoft does have a few things that can help it out.  The consoles success does not rely on its power alone.  Another key factor is the line up of games it will offer.  If the Xbox One can have better exclusive games than the PlayStation 4, then they may just have a superior console on its hands.  Even if Microsoft got an earlier release date on the bigger name multi-console games, this would put Xbox One at a greater advantage.  Another thing that Whitten said was that Microsoft has been working on making developing a lot simpler for the Xbox One.  This could pull some developers from Sony’s PlayStation 4.

Intel is making a big hairy deal with the South Korean film market!

Intel, Mr Go, Ling Ling, Dexter, Korea, Tampa

The Intel Corporation has a new business venture in South Korea and it doesn’t have to do with supplying Samsung Electronics with more hardware.  Intel has starting to assist the country in making three-dimensional movies.

Korean Animation technology is a little behind from their western counterparts.  This helps to explain why science fiction movies are not as popular in the big Korean film market.

Intel is testing that market by providing some of their high-end chips and cloud computing technologies to Dexter Studios for their upcoming film Mr. Go,  A new Korean movie that features a three-dimensional gorilla named Ling Ling.

President of Intel Korea, H. S. Lee, said at a news conference in Seoul last week, “For the depiction of a realistic move of a big wave, each and every drop of water is drawn through detailed and  complicated calculations of an equation.  The same goes for the movement of an (animal) fur.”

The film studio’s CG department, Dexter Digital, says that Ling Ling for Mr. Go comes with somewhere between two to 3 million strands of fur.

The planning and marketing director at Dexter, Lee Yoon-suk, had this to say, “Without the right hardware performance, it would have been impossible to make the movie.”

Dexter used supercomputers that ran the Intel’s Xeon E5 processors to make the film.
