Windows 8.1, Microsoft, Tampa, Update, Windows, Windows 8

Only seven months after its release, Microsoft has released details about its first major update, which is rumored to be named Windows 8.1.  The majority of the changes are based on user feedback and Microsoft’s overall plan for the operating system.

One thing they have worked on is more personalization options in Windows 8.1, with new colors and backgrounds to choose from for the start screen.  User will now be able to use Windows 8 devices as a unique picture frame if they like, due to the fact that the lock screen can show a slide show of pictures.  Users will now also be able take pictures with any built-in cameras without ever having to leave the lock screen with this update.

Today, Samsung has announced that they are releasing a smaller, lower-end version of the popular Galaxy S4 Mini with a 4.3 – inch screen.

Could Training your current employees save you money instead of hiring someone else who already has the skills you need?

New Hire, Company, Tampa, IT, Training, Skill Shortage

“Skills Shortage” seems to be an extremely active phrase as of late; however, it may be more beneficial for companies to train their IT employees after they are hired, rather than hire them with those skills already intact, according to reports.

One of the analysts who worked on the reports, Cushing Anderson, said a new hire with these skills already could cost the company anywhere from 1.5x to 3x the salary.  This obviously shows that training an  existing employee would save the company quite a bit of money, and you already know that the employee fits in well with the company.

Additionally, the pay rate of a new hire usually falls between 15% to 20% more than what the company expected or even wanted to pay, according to Anderson.  The cost only adds up because, “when the skill becomes plentiful, you don’t reduce their par,” he said.

A new hire’s cost to your company could also include a recruiter finder fee, which usually costs from 25% to 100% of the salary being offered.  It might also be a necessity to pay for travel for candidates for several interviews and pay for relocation expenses.

The better approach, according to Anderson, is to prepare for future IT needs by investing in staff training.

Training can fall anywhere on the spectrum from having the employee shadow someone with the skills the company needs to attending a fast-track boot camp training session.  It may even be cheaper to pay for a master’s degree in IT than to hire a new employee.

“There is always someone willing to move jobs if you’re willing to pay.”  according to Anderson.  What this quote basically means is, The idea of a skills shortage has more to do with what a company is willing to pay.

The IT jobs in highest demand involve big data usage and the ability to pull social networking into enterprise applications.  According to Anderson, other skill areas that are high in demand are, Cloud and cloud management, enterprise architecture, converged networking systems, mobile, video networking, and security.

Its actually a pretty simple device.  Basically, its a webcam that you can access over Wi-Fi and control through a Web Browser.  After that, all you have to do is tap into Petcube’s live video and sound, point the camera where you want it to be, and then talk to your animal.  Such technologies already exist, this one just happens to also have a laser.

That’s right, the Petcube has Lasers.  No need to worry, it’s a simply low powered laser that has been approved by vet to make sure it wont hurt your beloved animal, even if it shines in the animal’s eye.  Anybody who has ever played with their pet and a laser pointer knows this will never happen.

Playstation, Playstation 4, Tampa, Xbox, Xbox One, Microsoft

Yesterday, Microsoft revealed its long awaited Xbox One console.  This will be Microsoft’s third generation console.

The Xbox One mixes an advanced technical architecture with an all new design in attempts to give users a personalized experience that will respond instantly to gesture and voice commands.

The new, black, and sleek Xbox One console features a revamped Xbox logo, 5 billion transistors, 8 GB of RAM, USB 3.0, Wi-Fi direct, a Blu-Ray drive and a 64- bit architecture.  It also features a 1080P HD RGB camera and a brand new redesigned gaming controller.

The Xbox One will not be backwards compatible; however, Microsoft did say they will continue to support the Xbox 360.  Even though we haven’t heard anything yet as far as pricing goes, we do know the Xbox One will be released later this year.

Xbox One will also sync its operating system to the Windows kernel in just such a way to enable multitasking.  At its core, the Xbox One is meant to give the consumer a new level of personalized control over their entire  home entertainment experience, including games, TV, movies and music.

The Xbox One will also feature built in voice recognition system.  Just by telling your Xbox One “Xbox One”, Your Xbox will power on without the need to log in or wait for software updates.

As far as which console will out shine the other, we can’t predict the future; however, I don’t believe neither Xbox nor PlayStation is going anywhere anytime in the near future.

An American Customer Satisfaction report has been released! We have the ratings for Apple, Samsung, BlackBerry, Motorola and more!

Nokia, Samsung, Customer Satisfaction, HTC, LG, BlackBerry, Tampa, Apple, iPhone, Motorola

According to a new report, Apple customers are not as happy with their handsets as they were last year.  This is not to say that they are unhappy with Apple, just a little less satisfied then they were last year with their phones.

According to today’s report on American Customer Satisfaction, Apple has received a score of 81 out of 100 when it cam to customer satisfaction.  However, the company has dropped from its overall rating of 83 in 2012.  It seems that the iPhone rating is bringing down the Apple’s overall rating of 86 for their tablet, desktop, and laptop business.

Released in the same report, customer satisfaction with Motorola phones has increased 5 percent from last year to 77, Nokia had an increase of 1 percent to 76, and Samsung has posted the the largest gain since last year of 7 percent to 76.

The ACSI report said, “The improvement [for Samsung] is the largest yet for any cellphone manufacturer,” and,”Nevertheless, Samsung still remains behind industry leader Apple.”

HTC and LG both also saw a decline on the report, while BlackBerry had the same rating as last year at 69.

These handset’s results really shouldn’t be a shock to any of us.  Samsung’s latest devices, the Galaxy S4 included, have made the brand more popular with users; however, Apple’s latest smartphone, the iPhone 5, wasn’t viewed as a major leap over it’s prior generations.

Google talks about their issues with fragmentation on Android powered devices!

Fragmentation, Google I/O, Tampa, Google, Android, Updates

The engineers of the Google Android team claim to be working diligently to make sure that Android updates are given to new devices in a timely fashion.

During the Google I/O developer conference, 11 members of the Android development team answered the questions of the audience of developers.  The team did acknowledge the fragmentation issue with Android’s; however, they said the plan is to continue at a rapid pace of innovation.

Engineering director for the Android platform, Dave Burke, had this to say, “This is something we think about a lot.” “And we’re working internally to streamline the development process and make the software more layered.”

As Google rapidly released software updates, Fragmentation has been a major issue for Android powered devices since its inception.  Device makers and operators have not been able to keep up.  What this means to the consumer is, some devices don’t get updates for months while others do not get the new software at all.

Literally, there are millions of devices still running Android 2.2 Froyo and 2.3 Gingerbread.  Google originally released these two versions in May and December of 2010.  Google has extremely altered the Android programming interfaces since then.
