Why are Project Management skills important and where can these skills be obtained?

CAPM. Tampa, Project Management, PMP, certification

When reaching for IT and Business success, crossing the finish line takes top priority.  Due to this fact, project management has become an extremely important career path.

Author of three different books on project management, Sid Kemp, said, “In American business, growth is associated with the ability to lead other people…If you demonstrate an ability to lead teams, you’re on your way to being an IT project managers can write their own ticket at a lot of companies.”

But why do IT professionals find project managers so important?

  • IT project are constantly getting more and more complex
  • The emphasis is placed on teamwork and communication skills
  • A greater need to meet budgets and deadlines
  • The pressure on top executives to deliver results

IT Professionals who lack project-management skills may find it difficult to complete their duties in a timely fashion, leading into embarrassing mistakes if not outright chaos.  And in today’s business world, the consequences could be serve.

“We have to demonstrate some basic project/task management ability or someone else will do it for us.”According to CEO of CaseySoftware, D. Keith Casey Jr. “Currently that could mean outsourcing, offshore or not, or it could mean replacement.”

With the increased attention to IT projects, All of the members working on the project need project management skills, not just the project managers and the team leaders.  While its best for the team members to rely on the project manager to keep the overall projects on track, each individual must be responsible for their own work.

“It is essential that everyone on a project team have core project management skills,” said Kemp.  “The core of project management is self-management, which leads to highly productive work.  With these core skills, each person can define deliverables clearly, estimate their own work time and then deliver on time.  Then the entire team can build a realistic project schedule and deliver as promised.”

Now, you may be asking yourself, “I know how important project management is, but how do I acquire these skills?”  That is where we can help.  Here at New Horizons Tampa Bay, we are offering a Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification Preparation course starting June 17th, 2013 and ending June 21st, 2013.  The class will run from 9 AM to 5 PM at our training facility located at 5402 W Laurel Street, Tampa Florida, 33607.  If you would like more information about our PMP Class or any other technical training, give us a call at (813)387-3500.

Continual Growth in IT Hiring through 2013

Image certification, CompTIA A+, CompTIA Security+, healthcare ITAs we continue into the New Year, IT jobs are still on the rise.  Some of the cliches such as, “certifications are valuable difference makers in the IT job market”, “healthcare IT continues to grow and evolve”, and “IT job market remains strong into 2013” have been heard  a lot; however, they still remain true.

In the highly competitive IT job market, everything is taken into consideration.  An executive of Texas-based VAR Staffing said in the latest CRN article on an IT job growth series, “If we have two candidates and one has the experience and one has the certification, generally the VARs will want to speak to the certified candidate first.”

VAR has also found that the top certifications for gripping their attention on your resume is as followed:

  • Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) – considered and industry standard.
  • EMC Proven Professional certification and NetApp Certified Data management Administration certification – distinguishes markers in the field for engineers and storage architects.
  • CompTIA A+ certification – considered a requirement for service technicians by many large firms and also considered the “gold standard”.
  • CompTIA Security + certification – great entry level certification to get job seekers in the door in a rapidly growing sector.
  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certification – considered the number one in-demand certificate.

IT professionals wishing to focus their energy and map out a career path would find it very difficult to find a better industry than healthcare IT.

Xconomy Forum: Healthcare in Transition, a Boston-based event, included venture capitalists and entrepreneurs who asked if the healthcare IT is headed in the same “rise and fall” scenario as the dot-com boom of the late 1990’s.

The major difference is, during the dot-com boom there were neat solutions created to non-existent problems.  These healthcare technology start-ups are solving serious technology and business problems in this continually growing field.

Bryan Sivak, CTO of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said in his keynote address, “data is changing the healthcare industry right now.  Healthcare is an opaque market and you need transparency around cost and quality.”

According to an industry staffing firm, nearly two-thirds of recruiters and hiring managers expect to add additional IT professionals in the first half of the year.

Here at New Horizons we would be glad in educating and assisting you in obtaining your IT certifications.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to give us a call at (813) 387-3500 for more information and our upcoming class schedule.

CompTIA A+ Revised Exam

In order to meet industry demand, CompTIA will be releasing a new version of their A+ certification exam to ensure that students certified in A+ will be capable of using the information they’ve learned in real world situations. Effective October 9th, students seeking their A+ certification will be required to show their abilities to apply the knowledge learned in the A+ course by completing performance-based questions on the exam. These questions will require certification candidates to perform a task or solve a problem within a simulated IT environment, demonstrating specific knowledge or skills. As of now, the A+ exam only asks multiple-choice questions.

However, existing A+ exam without performance-based questions will remain available to certification candidates until August 31, 2013.
